This Penny Arcade sequence from June 2001 has always stuck with me. First, it’s insane to think that any gamers in 2001 thought they were in some kind of Dark Ages. Second, it’s fascinating that Xers still felt “video games” were this niche nerdy hobby that was being gentrified by “the cool kids” & made worse, because obviously they hadn’t seen anything yet in terms of gentrification. Third, likewise, it’s amazing that they thought they were in the age of “instant media” in 2001, but yeah, that’s certainly how it felt compared to the days of getting all your new game information from magazines. Lastly, the last strip’s complaints are still relevant today – forced online multiplayer, genre snobbery. All the classic PS2 games like GTA3 & MGS2 & Silent Hill 2 were about to come out later that year (along with original Halo for Xbox) so maybe they changed their tune, but – it’s not very funny to talk about how great everything is. Also, “Spacefucker 3D” entered my permanent vocabulary whenever I came across some hack platformer
