Brendan Greene, known as “PlayerUnknown,” who sparked the battle royale trend with PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, is now aiming for a grander project: a metaverse. Unlike conventional metaverses, which Greene refers to as isolated ‘IP bubbles,’ his vision involves a “3D internet” where users can freely create, alter, and share interconnected virtual worlds, akin to how websites operate on the internet. His studio, PlayerUnknown Productions, is developing three games to lay the groundwork for this project named “Artemis.” The first, “Prologue,” features survival gameplay with advanced terrain generation using machine learning and NASA data, set for release by 2025. The second game will focus on large-scale multiplayer, while Artemis itself is described as a vast, open platform where millions can interact in user-created 3D environments. Greene envisions Artemis as a creative hub without centralized control, with community-driven moderation, and plans for it to be universally accessible across devices. Importantly, NFTs are excluded from his vision, though he’s open to blockchain technology if beneficial. Greene anticipates a long development period, with funding coming from Prologue’s success, aiming to foster a vibrant, creator-focused gaming industry.
