Last Month, I vibecoded a Metaverse that hit 200 daily active users.
Here’s the story of building the world’s largest vibecoded open metaverse.
…I’m claiming this title but think its actually true
It started after @levelsio launched a “vibejam” to see who could build the best game using 90% LLM generated code
@TimurNegru reached out asking, “should we join?”.
It looked like fun! What did we have to lose?
Here was the idea.
Could we vibecode a metaverse with as many users as Meta’s Horizon Worlds over a single weekend?
48 hours of prompting Cursor and the metaverse came alive.
A Zuckerberg model was running around something that looked like Horizon Worlds, poking people.
But things really picked up after adding portals to jump between vibecoded worlds.
It started with a portal to @ky__zo Goose World. Soon, Goose models appeared in my metaverse while Zuckerbergs jumped through portals into other games.
It was incredible. You could pass your 3D avatar and name between games. I’ve worked in VR/AR for 6 years. I think this is the first example of a true open metaverse built on the web!
Traffic really exploded after Levels added a portal from his game directly into the metaverse. I had to upgrade Vercel from the free version to keep up with the users.
Behind the scenes? Complete chaos.
Games crashed constantly. An overwhelming number of portal requests. The multiplayer was broken and laggy as hell.
Enter @m_davies94, who jumped in at the perfect time.
He rebuilt multiplayer from scratch and optimized the game for mobile. Suddenly things were stable and working smoothly.
The result?
What I’m claiming as the largest open vibecoded metaverse ever. Peaking at 432 daily users and 42 simultaneous users.
Three quick takeaways, from this silly idea.
– Speed drives adoption. Daily feature launches bring users along for the journey.
– Just try. The worst outcome is learning something new.
– Ride other growing waves. The portal strategy brought users from other growing games.
The metaverse is still running and evolving.
